Brewer High School Theatre

The Brewer High School Theatre Department offers classes that provide students with the opportunity to build a foundation, explore and enhance their creative skills in multiple theatrical disciplines. The program currently serves 300 high school students and supports Fine Arts efforts across the entire district. The Mainstage Musical and One-Act Play are some of the favorite, yearly adventures!

The Brewer High School Theatre won several awards at the 2023 UIL One-Act Play competition. The following students medaled: Kaleb Jares, Best Technician; Jasmine Watson, Honorable Mention All Star Cast; Camden Corley, Honorable Mention All Star Cast; and Laila Graham, All Star Cast.

Director is Aja Jones, and Technical Director is Michael Klefeker.

In 2022, BHS advanced to the UIL One-Act Play Bi-District Championship.

Aja Jones is a graduate of UT Arlington. She began her career as a professional performer, with national touring credits and over a decade on the theatre stage. This is her 14th year in White Settlement ISD and 8th as Theatre Director at Brewer High School.

Allison is a graduate of Texas Tech and is in her 10th year at Brewer as an 8th grade English teacher. This is her fourth musical as Assistant Director and sixth production at BHS. She is also the middle school Academic UIL coordinator and works with the football and basketball programs. She is grateful to able to be involved in the lives of her current and former students.

BHS Course Offerings

Theatre Arts 1 introduces students to theatrical arts with emphasis on acting and performance. Students will play theatre games, explore solo and duet scene work. Other topics include improvisation, vocal technique, movement, storytelling, careers in the theatre, the reading of plays, technical design and backstage roles.

Theatre Arts II-IV is an acting course that builds on Theatre Arts I by strengthening techniques and skills of dramatic and comic performance. The class provides an advanced creative space where students dive deeper into theatrical aspects such as theatre history, script analysis, playwriting, and performance critique.

Technical Theatre I introduces students to all things "behind the scenes." From scenic design to set construction, this course includes hands-on learning of lighting and audio set up/strike and operation, special-FX, prop work, costuming, and stage management.

Technical Theatre II-IV builds on the foundation of Tech I through hands-on experience. Students use cross-curricular, real-world work as they create both the high schools' theatre season and support WSISD's Fine Arts events. Students thrive while learning to successfully create visual and auditory imagery for live, staged productions.

Varsity Theatre Production I-IV

Pre-requisite: Audition and Theatre Arts I

This accelerated program is a production lab combining pre-production, design, construction, marketing, performance, and post-production. Projects will foster artists' growth as they devise original work, study classical performance styles, and even explore playwriting, student directing, and long form Improvisation.

BMS Theatre

Brewer Middle School seventh and eighth graders have an opportunity to participate in a semester of Theatre during their seventh grade year and year-long Varsity Theatre in eighth grade.

7th Grade Semester Theatre introduces students to theatre history, behind the scenes occupations in theatre, plate spinning and juggling. Activities like the Puppet Pals Showcase and Theatre Festival in the classroom as well as Drama Club Ambassators help students build their confidence on stage.
8th Grade Varsity Theatre provides opportunities to learn Character Development and Analysis and Technical Theatre. Students participate in a Readers Theatre performance , UIL One Act Play, the Traveling Puppet Pals Troupe and Drama Club.
